Consonances: Reencounters with the Collection
Looking at the permanent collection of the Museo de Arte de Ponce from a new perspective allows us to establish unexpected connections between artworks that correspond to different historical and geographical contexts. The juxtaposition presented in this exhibition between European, Puerto Rican and North American artworks, from a period that spans five centuries (XVI to XX), fosters a visual and thematic dialogue that promotes the discovery of new ways of understanding the Museum’s collection.
Although world-renowned for its European artworks, the Museo de Arte de Ponce also preserves important examples of Puerto Rican art, which amount to approximately one third of the collection.
Consonances presents a selection of these together with examples from other international schools, establishing correspondences that stimulate the curiosity of our visitors. This effect is accentuated by showing side by side works that present themes that are common in the history of art – portraiture, landscape, religion, genre scenes, still-life, and the nude – allowing for harmonies between artworks that at first glance seem from disparate worlds; harmonies that show how human beings, regardless of their time or place of origin, express their concerns in similar ways.
