Notas puertorriqueñas: Donaciones recientes a la colección
May, 4 2023 – February 10, 2024
“Here culture will be made with universal harmonies, but with Puerto Rican notes…” With these words, publicly pronounced in 1964, our founder, don LuisA. Ferré, clearly explained his vision for the collection of the Muse de Arte de Ponce. To achieve this, the presence of Puerto Rican art was essential. For this reason, artworks by artists from the island have been part of the museum’s collection and exhibition plan since it opened its doors in 1959.
Over the years, the museum’s commitment to local artists has not wavered, and as a result, Puerto Rican art currently makes up approximately one-third of the collection. Our repository of Puerto Rican artworks has been enriched not only through the acquisitions made by Ferré and by future administrations of the museum, but also thanks to generous donations. This exhibition celebrates three donations received in 2022: the first artwork by Enoc Pérez to enter the museum’s collection thanks to a donation by the Michael Netsky Collection, four artworks donated by the Roderic Steinkamp Collection, of which is highlighted a large canvas by Mara de Mater O’Neill, and six artworks from the Reyes Veray Collection – including the iconic Pleas portfolio, a collaboration between Lorenzo Homar and Rafael Tufiño, which demonstrate the passion for Puerto Rican art shared by Architect Otto Reyes and Mrs. Vionnette Veray de Reyes.
