Lago en las montañas

En esta pintura, Gustave Courbet muestra la rigurosa aspereza del paisaje suizo. El artista trata de captar una visión realista de la naturaleza, en vez de idealizar su entorno. A diferencia de los paisajistas que lo precedieron, Courbet abandonó el estudio y pintó sus obras al aire libre. De ese modo pudo captar efectos fugaces de luz y atmósfera. Courbet solía usar una espátula para aplicar gruesos toques de pintura al lienzo, como podemos notar en los escabrosos picos de las montañas en este cuadro. Este paisaje abarca la crudeza y la acritud de la vida cotidiana.
