El rey Candaules

El rey Candaules

Este cuadro está basado en un episodio de las Historias de Herodoto. El rey Candaules ha invitado a su guardia Giges a que compruebe la belleza de la reina cuando ésta se desnude en la noche. La reina descubre al intruso y no dice nada, pero al día siguiente le da un ultimátum: matar al rey o matarse él. El guardia opta por lo primero. Jean-Léon Gérôme capta el momento crucial en que la reina da a Giges la señal de ataque. Recurriendo a objetos de utilería, fotografías, textos e incluso el consejo de un arquitecto, el artista ha pintado una muy idealizada escena de lo que imagina era la vida cotidiana en la antigua Grecia. El desnudo es el punto focal que equilibra las actitudes de los dos hombres.
