Desnudo femenino
Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida modeló cuidadosamente la forma del cuerpo de la mujer con gruesas capas de pintura. En contraste, apenas esbozó el cabello y los pliegues de las telas que la enmarcan, e incluso dejó algunas áreas del lienzo en blanco. La obra muestra el temprano dominio del color vibrante pero armonioso por parte del artista, así como su pasmosa habilidad para pintar rápida y espontáneamente. Sorolla dedicó Desnudo femenino a Emilio Sala Francés (1850-1910), uno de sus maestros en la Real Academia de España en Roma. Un año antes de terminar esta pintura, Sorolla viajó a París, donde vio, quizás por primera vez, pinturas impresionistas. Por otra parte, el desnudo del joven artista guarda un parecido asombroso con la obra maestra de Diego Velázquez, La Venus del espejo, y fue sin duda un homenaje y una respuesta a aquel famoso cuadro.
