The Museo de Arte de Ponce celebrates the Prelude of the Carnaval de La Playa de Ponce

(Ponce, Puerto Rico – January 14, 2023) – On Saturday, January 21, the Museo de Arte de Ponce will offer to the public a varied artistic and cultural program organized with the Casa Museo del Vejigante. The event coincides with the launch of the “Sábados en el Museo” initiative in which the renowned institution will dedicate the last Saturday of each month to offer the public workshops and special activities free of charge.

“We are very excited to organize together with the Casa Museo del Vejigante the prelude to the Carnaval of Vejigantes de La Playa de Ponce. We invite the Ponce community and the entire public of Puerto Rico to visit the Museum on Saturday, January 21 and enjoy one of the most deeply rooted traditions of our city. We will offer art workshops alluding to the Carnival, Bomba classes and many surprises for all families,” said Cheryl Hartup, Director of the Museo de Arte de Ponce. “This event marks the launch of our new initiative aimed at the community and called ‘Sábados en el Museo‘ that from February onwards we will carry out every last Saturday of the month with varied activities and, sometimes, in alliance with other cultural entities as we are doing on this occasion,” added Hartup.

The programming of the prelude to the Carnaval de Vigentes de La Playa de Ponce will take place at the Museum, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, entrance through Jardín Puerto Rico (McMannus Street); and will have the following programming:

  • 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
    Mask making workshop
    Chiringas workshop
  • 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
    Bomba, Toque and Dance
  • 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
    Plena Workshop with the Pleneros and Vejigantes of the Carnaval de La Playa de Ponce (comparsa)
  • 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
    Exhibitions:
    “Vis a Vis: Ponce artists in conversation with the collection of the Museo de Arte de Ponce” and “Consonancias: Reencuentros con la colección”.

The Casa Museo del Vejigante will also take to the Museo de Arte de Ponce a presentation of costumes and masks of native vejigantes of Ponce, made by its students; and will be attended by the master craftsmen Noel Torres Quirós and Edwin Muñiz Pérez. The workshops of Bomba and Plena will be offered by the students and commanded by the teacher César Hernández. In addition, teachers Roberto Texiera and Macri will make a presentation with students participating in their Plena workshops.

“For us it is a great honor to bring to the Museo de Arte de Ponce, for the first time in its history, the Carnaval de La Playa as everyone knows it. Never before had this event and the Casa Museo del Vejigante had the opportunity to organize, together with the team of the Museo de Arte Ponce, a fiesta de pueblo and exhibit the works of our students in such a prestigious institution”, said Gilberto Limardo, Director of the Casa Museo del Vejigante, in Ponce. The Carnaval de Vejigantes de La Playa de Ponce will be held from February 3 to 5, at the Lucy Grillasca Park in La Playa de Ponce.

SABADOS EN EL MUSEO

Starting in February, the Museo de Arte de Ponce will be open on the last Saturday of the month, from 12:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the initiative Sábados en el Museo, with workshops and special activities for all families. This activity is sponsored by the Ángel Ramos Foundation.
