Judith con la cabeza de Holofernes

Según el Antiguo Testamento, Judith era una viuda hermosa, adinerada y virtuosa. Cuando su ciudad se encontró sitiada por los asirios, fue a visitar al general enemigo, Holofernes, en su campamento. Seducido por la belleza, inteligencia y elocuencia de Judith, Holofernes la recibió como huésped distinguida. Una noche, sabiendo que Holofernes dormía completamente ebrio, Judith entró en su tienda y lo decapitó con la propia espada del general. Al perder a su líder, los asirios se retiraron y la ciudad se salvó. La belleza legendaria de Judith atrajo a los artistas del Renacimiento tanto al norte como al sur de los Alpes. Aquí, Lucas Cranach I subraya la versión alemana del ideal estético contemporáneo, contrastando los rasgos sobrenaturales de Judith con la cabeza recién cortada de Holofernes y la espada con las manchas de sangre aún visibles.
